for Tuesday 29 July:
1:00 Board of Directors Meeting: Henderson Room, Cadboro Commons Building Victoria is at the southern end of
Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It can be reached by air or sea.
IF YOU ARE FLYING TO VICTORIA: you can
fly either through Seattle, Washington (USA) or through Vancouver, B.C.
(Canada). From Victoria Airport, the " Airporter" shuttle bus serves downtown
Victoria and also the University of Victoria (on request). It runs every 30
minutes and costs (Canadian) $13.00. A taxi for the same journey will cost
between $40.00 and $45.00.
IF YOU ARE DRIVING TO VICTORIA: (1) the
most frequent car ferries by far are from Tsawwassen (near the Canada/United
States border, 35 km south of Vancouver) to Swartz Bay (30 km north of Victoria
and the University of Victoria). They leave Tsawwassen hourly from 7 a.m. to 7
p.m. (June 26 - July 30) and from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (July 31 - September 7). The
crossing time is 1 hr. 35 min. Reservations ($15 extra per crossing) can be made
through the internet ("Reservations" on www.bcferries.com ) ; otherwise there is often a
one-sailing wait during the summer or a two-sailing wait at peak times. From
Swartz Bay, the road to Victoria is clearly marked and traffic to the University
is directed east on MacKenzie. (2) There is a car ferry called the "Coho", which
sails between Port Angeles, Washington (about a 3˝ hour drive from Seattle) and
downtown Victoria. The crossing time is 1 hr. 35 min. and during the summer
there are four crossings daily in each direction (see www.cohoferry.com for the schedule, and also www.portangeles.org/images/map-olympicpeninsula.gif for a map). [From Port Angeles there is also a
passenger-only ferry, the Victoria Express (journey time 1 hour), and provision
is made for drivers to leave their cars at the terminal and travel as foot
passengers. During the summer it makes three crossings daily from Port Angeles
(8.10 a.m., 12.15 p.m. and 4.15 p.m.) and from Victoria (9.45 a.m., 2 p.m. and
6.15 p.m.); for further details, see www.victoriaexpress.com . ] (3) There is a car ferry from Anacortes, Washington (about a 2˝ hour
drive from Seattle) to Sidney (close to Swartz Bay, see (1) above). Boats leave
twice daily. They travel through the San Juan/Gulf Islands and make stops on the
way. The total journey time is 3 hours. For further details, see www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedules/current/index.cfm?route=ana-sid (including details on how to make
reservations.)
IF YOU ARE COMING BY SEA AS A FOOT
PASSENGER: (1) The "Victoria Clipper" is a high-speed catamaran, which sails
from downtown Seattle to downtown Victoria. There is reserved seating and you
will need to book well ahead ("Online Booking" on www.victoriaclipper.com/marketing/homepage.shtml ) . The minimum crossing time is 2˝ hours, and it
is a lovely trip. For exact details of the schedule, see www.victoriaclipper.com/marketing/information_fares.shtml . A taxi from Seattle airport
to the Clipper dock will cost about $15 - $20. From downtown Victoria, a # 14
bus will take you to the University ($1.75); or a taxi to the University will
cost about $15. (2) Foot passengers on the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay ferry can
travel by Pacific Coach Lines from Vancouver airport to the ferry terminal.
There is also a Pacific Coach Lines service from Swartz Bay to downtown
Victoria. Local public buses would cost $2.50 to the University, but they are
slower and you would need to change at the Town and Country shopping center from
bus # 70 to # 26. A taxi would cost around the same as from the airport, maybe
slightly more. (3) The " Coho" car ferry sails between Port Angeles and downtown
Victoria; for details, see (2) in the DRIVING TO VICTORIA section and (1) in
this section.
Further details of travel to Victoria and
the University of Victoria can be obtained from "Getting to Victoria" on the
